Purpose
The Mechanical Engineer II designs and develops mechanical components and subsystems for Divergent’s internally developed Monolith One laser powder bed fusion platform, printers in the same class, next-generation platforms, and adjacent equipment.
This is a hands-on engineering role responsible for delivering defined mechanical design efforts from concept through detailed design, build, testing, and release. Working with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, this individual will apply sound engineering fundamentals, solve technical problems, and contribute to the development, reliability, and continuous improvement of complex industrial equipment.
The Role
- Own defined mechanical components and subsystems through concept development, detailed design, prototyping, validation, release, and integration.
- Translate established technical and operational requirements into practical mechanical designs, identifying constraints, interfaces, and acceptance criteria with support as needed.
- Develop concepts and detailed designs using CAD models, drawings, GD&T, tolerance analyses, engineering calculations, component selections, and bills of material.
- Apply mechanical engineering fundamentals across structures, mechanisms, precision motion, fluids, thermal systems, sealing, enclosures, and machine integration.
- Evaluate design alternatives and make informed tradeoffs across performance, reliability, safety, manufacturability, serviceability, cost, and schedule.
- Identify technical risks and execute appropriate engineering analysis, prototyping, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and design iteration to validate designs.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, suppliers, and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues and ensure successful implementation.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation and execute engineering changes through release, supporting procurement, manufacturing planning, validation, and deployment.
- Support machine integration, troubleshooting, and fleet investigations, identifying root causes and implementing improvements to existing hardware.
- Communicate technical decisions, progress, risks, and challenges clearly, seeking guidance or escalating issues when appropriate.
- Contribute to design reviews, continuous improvement initiatives, and the development of future printer platforms and subsystems.
