The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
The Metro desk at The Times is seeking a creative, knowledgeable and collaborative Senior Producer for its video journalism. Metro's journalism spans fast-moving breaking news, enterprise and investigations on a range of beats, from politics and education to transportation and criminal justice. We bring the issues of New York and its surrounding tri-state region to readers around the world, with deeply-reported narratives and unexpected tales.
You will bring a passion for news, a commitment to fast, authoritative coverage of breaking and developing stories, and the news judgment to identify enterprise stories and exclusives. An experienced video journalist and a manager, you'll help broaden Metro's coverage in a range of video formats. You are a talented storyteller and strong people manager who is passionate about breaking news, live journalism and enterprise.
Metro is known across the newsroom for its collegial culture. You'll work closely with Metro editors and reporters, and build strong relationships across the newsroom — especially Video and Photo — and partner with Metro leadership to shape and drive coverage. You'll bring an innovative, collaborative approach to motivating and inspiring teams to scale video on the desk and deliver fast-turnaround and ambitious work.
You will oversee everything from live streams and news clips to enterprise projects and Reporter Video, managing a team of video journalists to execute on each of those priorities. Your sharp visual and editorial skills will ensure that the right stories are assigned. Before videos are published onsite and on social media, you will ensure that they meet the editorial standards, style and quality of the Times.
This is an in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities
You will drive innovative, exclusive video coverage across a range of video formats, from short-form live-blog updates to Reporter Videos featuring Times journalists, enterprise stories and columns, and occasional field deployments.
You will manage and help hire video journalists on the desk.
You will help colleagues assess whether a story is suited to video and whether it should be told primarily or exclusively in that format, and mentor them as they develop their video storytelling skills.
You will lead story development
